957: How AI Agents Are Automating Enterprise Data Operations, with Ashwin Rajeeva
Ashwin Rajeeva, cofounder and CTO of Acceldata, details the architecture and philosophy behind their Agentic Data Management (ADM) platform. He explains how the Xlake reasoning engine provides crucial context for AI agents to operate across petabyte-scale enterprise data, enabling capabilities like self-healing data pipelines and automated data quality assurance, while also discussing strategies for leading technical teams in the age of AI.
Acceldata is pioneering Agentic Data Management (ADM) to automate and elevate data management practices that have remained largely unchanged for the last 15-20 years. The core idea is to replace manual, workflow-heavy tasks traditionally performed by data stewards with intelligent, autonomous AI agents.
The Xlake Reasoning Engine: Providing Context to AI
A fundamental challenge for AI in the enterprise is its lack of knowledge about internal data landscapes. An LLM might be an expert on the public internet, but it knows nothing about a specific company’s data. The Xlake reasoning engine is designed to solve this problem.
- Cross-Lake Compute: It acts as a compute engine that can operate across an enterprise’s entire data estate—spanning on-premise data centers and multiple cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Snowflake). This capability is crucial for tackling “data sprawl,” the common enterprise reality of having data fragmented across various systems.
- Context Provider: Xlake provides AI models with the necessary tools and context to understand and interact with this internal data. It essentially creates a searchable index and an API for the enterprise’s private data, allowing an AI agent to ask questions and receive aggregated, petabyte-scale information.
- Agent Orchestration: When a user poses a query to the ADM platform, it can spin up multiple specialized agents (e.g., a Data Catalog Agent) that use the Xlake engine to gather information and formulate an answer.
Autonomous, Self-Healing Data Pipelines
A key application of this agentic architecture is the creation of self-healing data pipelines, which is especially effective as more pipelines are defined as code (e.g., using Spark or SQL).
The process works as follows:
- Error Detection: An agent detects an anomaly or error by monitoring log entries from a data pipeline.
- Context Gathering: The agent automatically clones the pipeline’s code repository. The Xlake engine provides the full context of the error, including the specific tables, columns, data types, and metadata involved.
- AI-Powered Code Correction: The AI, armed with this context, rewrites the Spark or SQL code to fix the issue.
- Automated Redeployment: The corrected code is then automatically redeployed back into the execution cluster.
This autonomous remediation compresses a process that would typically require bug reports, developer intervention, and a full CI/CD cycle into a swift, automated workflow.
The Role of Human-in-the-Loop
While the system is designed for autonomy, it doesn’t necessitate blind trust in the AI. The philosophy is that for complex enterprise problems, human oversight remains critical.
The economic value comes from the fact that you compress maybe one week of work into maybe an hour… But I think the need to approve, disapprove, review or reject has to come back to somebody in the value chain and usually these are the people who are the experts.
The goal of autonomy is to handle the vast majority of the work without supervision, but a human expert always remains the final gatekeeper to review and approve critical changes.
Leading Technical Teams in the Age of AI
As a CTO, the focus must shift from a pure “architect/programmer” mindset to one that encompasses customers, marketers, and employees.
- On Motivating Engineers: Beyond a certain salary threshold, talented engineers are driven by meaning and creativity, not just compensation. A key to retention is fostering an environment of innovation where engineers feel they are solving novel problems, not just executing a predefined roadmap of Jira tickets. Encouraging engineer-led initiatives, like Acceldata’s open-source Open Data Platform (ODP), gives them a way to express creativity and build something they believe in.
- On Hiring: The rise of LLMs makes remote coding interviews challenging. The focus should be on assessing a candidate’s ability to build—to translate a real-world business problem into a technical solution. This is best done with practical, face-to-face interviews that mirror day-to-day work, rather than abstract algorithm tests.
- On Innovation Cycles: While enterprises are often slow and risk-averse, they are also eager not to be left behind by the AI revolution. The strategy is to anticipate the industry’s direction and build solutions that will be ready when customers are ready for adoption. The goal is to meet them at their point of readiness with a mature, valuable product.
