Alex is an AI recruiting partner designed to help companies and staffing firms automate and scale their hiring processes. By handling tasks like phone screens, video interviews, scheduling, and updating applicant tracking systems (ATS), Alex aims to make hiring more efficient. The current market is plagued by inefficiency, with applicant volumes tripling in recent years and the average time-to-hire reaching 60 days. The primary bottlenecks are the limited bandwidth of human recruiters and the difficulty of matching the right candidates to the right opportunities. Alex addresses this by enabling employers to interview every applicant, gathering deep insights from these interactions to facilitate better matching at scale.

How the AI Works

The platform is built to be a comprehensive and autonomous recruiting assistant. Its effectiveness stems from its ability to learn and adapt.

  • Data Integration and Learning: Alex integrates with a company’s Applicant Tracking System (ATS) or HRIS. It analyzes the job description, intake notes from the hiring manager, and profiles of previously successful hires to learn the company’s culture and specific role requirements. This allows it to act as an effective employer brand ambassador.
  • Specialized Role Fine-Tuning: For niche and technical roles, such as a “nuclear welder” or a “COBOL developer,” the AI can be fine-tuned to understand the specific jargon and skill requirements, enabling it to dig deep during interviews and accurately assess a candidate’s qualifications.
  • Rich Data Analysis: Unlike a human recruiter who might distill a 30-minute interview into handwritten notes, Alex captures and analyzes the entire interaction. This includes video and audio data, allowing it to evaluate not only technical skills but also soft skills like communication style and conciseness. It then provides a detailed stack-ranking of candidates, supported by direct quotes and evidence from the interview.

The technical foundation for Alex became viable with the launch of models like GPT-4 Turbo in late 2023. The team had to build their own orchestration platform to connect various models, achieving the low-latency, high-performance, and reliable voice agent necessary for a positive candidate experience.

We really owned that orchestration platform and being able to connect all the different models succinctly to be able to have a low latency, high performant, reliable agent.

The Candidate Experience and Uncovering Hidden Talent

A primary focus for the founders is improving the candidate experience, which they believe has been a failing of previous recruiting technologies.

  • Eliminating Ghosting: By guaranteeing an initial interview for every applicant, Alex ensures that no candidate is left without a response.
  • Continuous Engagement: The platform provides a consistent point of contact. Candidates can text Alex at any time to ask questions about company policies or get updates on their application status, creating a supportive journey rather than a single interview event.
  • Discovering Overlooked Candidates: Alex can sift through vast talent pools—including a company’s own “lost” database of past applicants—to find qualified individuals. In one instance, a customer was hiring for COBOL developers, a role requiring a rare skill. Alex scanned their existing ATS, found 11 relevant candidates who had been overlooked, automatically interviewed them, and submitted them for placement right away.

An Adversarial Market: AI vs. AI

The job market is inherently adversarial, and the introduction of AI has amplified this dynamic. As employers use AI to screen, candidates are using AI to apply and cheat.

  • Candidate-Side AI: There has been a significant uptick in candidates using AI tools to mass-apply for jobs and to assist them during interviews with real-time answer suggestions from transparent overlays.
  • Alex’s Countermeasures: To maintain the integrity of the process, the team has developed countermeasures, including cheat detection and models for identifying live deepfakes in video interviews. The AI is also built with guardrails and robust prompting to prevent prompt injection and keep the conversation on track, even when candidates attempt to “hack” it.

The Future: Supercharging Recruiters

The founders do not envision a future where AI replaces human recruiters. Instead, they see AI as a tool to augment their capabilities.

We’re not looking to replace recruiters. And recruiters won’t be replaced. They’re going to be supercharged.

AI will handle the repetitive, administrative tasks that consume a recruiter’s time: asking the same five screening questions hundreds of times, scheduling interviews, and updating software. This frees up recruiters to focus on high-value, strategic work:

  • Building deeper relationships with hiring managers.
  • Closing candidates who are on the fence.
  • Spending quality time with the most qualified prospects to ensure they join the team.

The human elements of relationship-building and strategic closing are things AI is not poised to replace. By automating the busywork, Alex allows recruiters to reinvest their time where it matters most.
